Type Design | Fall 2024
Brighton is a bracketed serif typeface designed to flex between display type and small text. Wide metrics and a tall x-height creates a strong, confident foundation to a ever-so-slightly wacky typeface. Idiosyncratic details aim to provide a sense of whimsy within the typeface, further materialized with alternate swooshed glyphs, all while maintaining a sense of typographic maturity.
Named after one of my favorite Boston boroughs, Brighton aims to invoke a sense of delight into practical type.
Notable Glyphs

Balancing round counters with angular turns was a challenge to design, but resulted in a delightfully friendly little g, with it’s incomplete bowl stroke and curious ear.

![Uppercase K]()
Although I contemplated bringing more balance to the K, I couldn’t bring myself to undo the confident, cocky nature that the bottom-heavy legs of the K create.

![Uppercase R]()
Whereas the K runs bottom heavy, the R is top heavy. One of my favorite shapes in Brighton is the white space that the bottom of the R forms, morphing between the sharp corners of serifs and round edges of the leg.

Brighton’s Q has room to play within it’s wide counter, with a loopy tail that peels off the main stroke and bounces off the descender line.

The 7 plays with changes in weight between the stroke to creating a swirly, gracious form.

Wider at the bottom than up top, Brighton’s 5 feels like it walks around with brazen confidence, while kept in check with a bracketed serif and a friendly rounded terminal.
