Type Design | Summer 2025
This display face blends inspiration from Old Western woodcut type with a thorny, floral refresh. The type carries a bold weight, with medium contrast between thick and thin strokes, and ornamented with median spurs. West Fens aims to feel both bold and delicate, bringing a slightly more naturalistic edge to Old Western type.
Notable Glyphs

One quirk of West Fens is the thin crossbar donning the M, N, and W, bringing delicate lining to the diagonal strokes.

Another quirk of the typeface is the small spurred chin of the ‘J’ and ‘U’ that blossoms before the stroke rounds the curve.

Delightfully serpentine and smooth, the West Fens ‘S’ is among my favorite glyphs in the set because of its graceful and balanced form.

One of my favorite feature of West Fens is the little spike that peeps out of the ‘T’.

The 4 has a trumpeting nature to it, and the main stroke opens up the interior counter to breath in more negative space.

One challenge of designing West Fens was balancing the typeface’s organic forms with structured type. The arms of the E are branch-like and bendy, but hold enough weight to remain legible and structured.
