Goudy Old style & the arts and crafts movement
Book Design | Summer 2024
This book explores the history behind the typeface Goudy Old Style, and summarizes the Arts & Crafts movement by setting information on two parallel axis and families of type.
Type System
The book uses different type families to differentiate between information about the Arts & Crafts movement (top) and Goudy Old Style (bottom). They also use different column widths that are defined within the same grid system.
Eight columns, seperated by eighth-inch gutters define the text boxes. Text about Arts & Crafts spans 4 columns, while text about Goudy Old Style spans 5 columns.
Hierachy through scale & hue
The main challenge of designing this book was creating a visually balanced page that still felt dynamic.
To achieve this, I toiled with scale and opacity of the elements on the page to create a sense of depth and visual weight on the page.
